How did you get started in the industry?
During my junior year of college, I visited my cousin in NYC over spring break — she was working at Health magazine in the beauty department at the time — and she mentioned that she needed an intern. Um, hi, me! Once I expressed interest in the opportunity, she spoke with her boss, worked out the details, I rented a dorm at NYU for the summer, and I moved to the city that May. After interning the entire summer in the beauty industry, I was hooked and knew that I needed to come back to New York as soon as I graduated. My cousin kept me in the loop with jobs that were open, and as my graduation came closer, a position opened up at Shape magazine as the assistant beauty editor. So, I applied for it, interviewed, got the job, and I've been working in the industry ever since.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Being really hard on myself when things haven’t worked out how I’ve wanted them to along the way. I heard pastor Joyce Meyer once say, “Life is lived forward and understood backward,” and it’s so true. Don’t get me wrong, it has taken me a few years to actually understand that and accept that everything happens for a reason, but you really do have to trust in that and not worry.
Who’s a girl boss that you admire and why?
Honestly, I’m most impressed by any woman who truly does it all: wakes up to take care of their kids in the morning, goes to work and kills it, comes home and makes sure their kids and partner are fed, and does it all over again the next day. I have a lot of friends who are moms and still maintain their career, and I’m just in awe of them. I can barely get myself out of bed in the morning!
What’s your go to outfit when you want to look like a boss?
Hmm, something black and white. It’s just makes you look so put together. Oh, and red lipstick!
Do you have a favorite project?
I love conceptualizing, bringing a team of talented people together, and seeing through photo shoots; it’s my favorite part.
What do you LOVE about your job?
A few things: The fact that I get to write about beauty, a subject that everyone loves; that every day is different than the last, so it never gets old; and the people that I get to work with, interview, and shoot with!
Can you give any advice or tips to individuals who are trying to enter your field?
OK, there are a few things: 1) The contacts you make and the relationships you build with those contacts are really important, so stay in touch with people you meet and genuinely reach out to them to see how/what they're doing — not just when you need something. 2) Your reputation is everything — it takes a while to build and one wrong move to ruin, so be mindful of how you act in public, what you say, and what you post on social media. 3) Be kind and be a team player. No one wants to work with a mean girl, especially one who isn't willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
