Official Job Title: PEOPLE Magazine Style and Beauty Director
How did you get started in the industry?
I went to journalism school (the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University) where I majored in magazines. While I was in school, worked at one of the campus newspapers and spent my summers interning at different magazines. After I graduated, I got an internship in the beauty department at Cosmopolitan, which quickly turned into a full-time assistant job. I ended up staying at Cosmo for almost nine years.
Are there any new trends you’re excited about?
I’ve never been a big heels girl, so I’m thrilled it’s now considered cool to wear sneakers with just about any outfit. I own a dozen pairs of Vans and I love wearing them with a dress to work.
How do you choose what stories/Celebs/products to feature?
It depends on the platform. I oversee all style and beauty content for print and digital at PEOPLE, so it’s up to my team and me to determine what works best where. A trend that resonates with our Instagram audience might not have the same appeal to our print readers. Same goes for celebrities. A story about a star’s street style might get lots of traffic online, but doesn’t necessarily translate on a page.
Whose a girl boss that you admire and why?
I recently shot a video for PEOPLE with Jenna Lyons 36 hours before the J.Crew Spring/Summer ’17 presentation and it was such an amazing experience. She was super hands-on but also let her team do their thing. And she was incredibly funny and charming. You can tell that she inspires the people around her and makes them want to work hard.
What’s your go to outfit when you want to look like a boss?
Skinny jeans or leather pants, a silky top, a fitted blazer and tall boots.
Do you have a favorite project?
The PEOPLE Today Show Beauty Awards. We partnered with them last year and it was such a success that we’re working together again this year. It requires an insane amount of planning and coordination to pull it off, but the result is worth all of the effort.
What do you LOVE about your job?
As much as I enjoy interviewing my favorite celebs on the red carpet, the best part of my job is the PEOPLE style team. They’re the smartest, funniest, most dedicated bunch of writers and editors and I feel very lucky that I get to work with them every day.
Can you give any advice or tips to individuals who are trying to enter your field?
Be a jack of all trades or at least fake it! There’s no such thing anymore as a job where you only do one thing. Now you have to know how to do it all. It’s definitely a challenge, but the quicker you can adapt your skill set to a new platform, the more invaluable you are to a brand.
