How did you get started in the industry?
As a sales associate at a men’s/women’s boutique in Chicago – Mark Shale.
Who’s a girl boss that you really admire and why?
Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook and founder of leanin.org. She had the courage to admit, after her husband died and she became a single mother, that her Lean In philosophy did not fully account for the challenges that others might face. It takes a lot of courage to admit you’re wrong—to yourself and others, especially when you’ve been so outspoken.
What’s your go to outfit when you want to look like a boss?
A black pantsuit with a cool blouse and awesome black heels.
What do you LOVE about your job?
Selecting what my customers are going to love and want to wear! And, I love buying year-round, whether it’s men’s women’s, children’s apparel or accessories.
How do you choose which brands to bring into the store?
I do my research and talk to reps, vendors and other buyers. But really, when I see something I believe my customers won’t be able to live without, I buy it.
What new trends are you excited about?
I’m excited about body suits; velvet touches on dresses, pants, shirts, etc.; shirts with a twist: dropped shoulders, dramatic sleeves, etc.; and athletic inspired hoodies.
Can you give any advice or tips to individuals who are trying to enter your field?
Don’t be deterred by not having a fashion/merchandising degree. I started as a sales associate and advanced by working hard and working smart. Diverse experience and people skills matter as much as taste and foresight.
